"Dead Horses in Ranma & Sailor Moon Fanfic" is an article first compiled by Scott K. Jamison and was published online on August 14th, 1998. It was designed to outline various plot concepts in Ranma ½ and Sailor Moon fan fiction, as well as crossovers between the two, that had by 1998 already become overused clichés.
“ While it's certainly not true that every possible plot twist or character twitch has already been used up, some have been more heavily mined than others in fanfiction. Some of them have been done so often (and so often badly) that the experienced reader, upon seeing someone attempting to "reinvent the wheel", can only sigh and think "here we go again."
Thus this list, which hopes to cover the most commonly overused themes and scenes, not to forbid their reuse, but to let the beginning writer know what has already been done, and done well.
Each cliché is listed, beginning with some short commentary on the cliché. There follows a list of two-to-three works of fan fiction that are considered to be the best examples of where the cliché works. The recommended works were suggested to Jamison by a number of regular writers of Ranma ½ and Sailor Moon fan fiction of the time, including Alan Harnum and Gary Kleppe.
